PROPER FITNESS - NO FLUFF, NO FADS, NO LIES, NO MERCY!!!

Proper Fitness Coaching

Tom Whelan

Information on Tom's one to one exercise coaching services in Piccadilly:

I mainly run this site for fun, 1-2-1 personal training is the day job.

This isn't your typical London personal training website, but consider that a good thing. If you like the sound of it, then you are more likely to be a suitable client.

I used to have a separate PT website, but it's not necessary, I only do very limited marketing so a simple page of explanation should suffice. If you need more info please feel free to contact me directly.

Below is some basic info about how I coach my clients:

I prefer not to call it personal training...to me, personal training conjures up images of screaming trainers, posers, poorly educated newly qualified gym instructors and the sort of nonsense you see on TV shows such as The Biggest Loser.

I prefer to see it as movement, exercise and fat loss coaching. No gimmicks, no nonsense - just coaching on how to move well, how to get fit and strong and how to eat for fat loss.

I'm lucky enough to work out of the gym at Le Meridien Piccadilly.

As you can see, it's quiet - spacious and has only the necessary equipment.

It is rare to find a central London gym with such a quiet spacious environment. I like it. You probably will too.

More on the gym can be found at http://www.lemeridienpiccadilly.co.uk/health-club

The media, dodgy sales people and others have different terms that 'describe' what their products can do. I don't like this.

It's simple really - if you want to change your body's appearance, (surgery, cosmetics and hair cuts aside) you can either get more or less fat or more or less muscle.

There is no such thing as toning and sculpting. They are merely descriptive terms.

So we train to maintain muscle (or build depending on your goals) and burn fat in the most effective way possible - its science.

We also focus on quality movement and performance. This is what matters in terms of how you feel and how you can perform over all your future gym sessions.

To me, proper fitness is a combination of moving to function better, building strength, mobility and agility where it matters and building physique goals on top of that.

Everything we do, we have a reason for. Not just because it looks cool or new, but because it's good for you, because it suits your body and because it gets results.

Unlike the magazine hosting this info - this is not hardcore NO MERCY!!! - type training, it is proper fitness giving you what you need to bring you further along the continnuum of athleticism at the best pace for you. Most of my clients are office workers who come to learn proper fitness from scratch, lose weight and start to feel better about themselves. They become much More-Athletic.

Although the session by session content varies dramatically from person to person to person, Basically, this is what I do -

Everything we do is an assessment in some way.

I use movement screening, static range of motion tests, functional range of motion tests and plenty of strength tests to judge your current condition and pick appropriate starting points.

Humans have certain inbuilt movements.

I coach them, and base training around them using strength exercises that challenge them or help to restore them.

A variety of tools all have their place - kettlebells, sandbags, bodyweight/weighted vest, barbells, dumbbells, bands.

As with anyone starting exercise, you want to see visible results fast. So following assessment our first job is to pick a number of exercises we can use immediately to generate a training effect (make you look better and get fitter).

The next task is to continually work, train and reassess you as we improve your skill, body awareness, strength and movement quality so that you continually get healthier fitter and stronger and so that down the road we have many more potentialially more effective exercises to choose from.

Absolutely.

As long as you start training smart and generate a calorie deficit - you will rapidly see visible improvements in your physique.

You need to eat well as well as train hard, it doesn't matter which diet or method you choose (and I have many) - they all work, the challenge is adherence and fitting some kind of limitation/smart choices into your lifestyle.

Focus on performance, eat for fat loss -and you will look better in no time.

In summary this is what it's all about. Strive to improve your strength, mobility, skill and fitness, then eat to fuel the performance or fat loss results you want.

You can probably still train. Good movement and smart training helps.

But if it's complicated I have links. My focus is on continual learning and education on how to coach effective strength and conditioning.

I do not specialise and study in depth muscle testing and injury fixing. I have links to an excellent Z Health Trainer, an excellent MAT Trainer and they with their osteopaths.

if injured and want to train, get in touch and I will point you in the right direction.

This is what it takes to be successful with your training. My job is to teach you proper technique and ensure you work hard and smart - consistently.

I am a golf fanatic - I was as a kid, but never got any good. I am again now, but this time is different. I'm studying, practicing almost daily at Urban Golf) and chasing down my dream of being scratch and hitting the ball a mile (not literally). I'm chasing the 400 yard dream - that is to hit the ball 400 yards on a straight hard flat fairway. It may be out of reach - it may not - time will tell. In theory I need to improve my record swing speed of 124mph to about 140mph (about a 13% improvement) - connect properly - and hit the damn thing straight (possibly on a very hot day).

Whether you want me to put you through the Golf Digest Golf Combine or whether you want more club head speed, or the ability to not hurt yourself golfing, I suspect I can help you.

I won't tell you we can tone your golf specific muscles - because that's all of them. But I will tell you we can make you a better athlete, work on your posture, arm speed, mobility and shoulder stability to make you a better golfer.

I am a ferocious reader, youtuber and purchaser of training educational material.

It all started with a Sports Science Degree.

It restarts every time I realise that I know a lot, but there's still so much I don't know.

My goal over the next few years is to continually grow the magazine for fun & to promote proper fitness, and to get better at coaching people to be fit.

You come and visit. 1-3 times per week.

I teach you to be fit. You pay me.

I will see the motivated once per month as long as you pay attention, do as your told and practice what I tell you to practice between sessions. Generally this doesn't work for most, you need a regular appointment.

If you're interested get in touch.

Suitable clients can come in for a consultation, assessment and chat to find out if we are compatible.

I'm not big on sales, just training; So get in touch if you want to ask a question or two - I won't keep harassing you through email.
